Whoa, did I ever think I would be writing a newsletter behind the business I started? No. I had no idea I’d be in this position at this point in my life, but honestly, who ever dreamed 2020 would look like this? So many of us have had so many shifts in our lives, and I’m shifting and growing where I can see the opportunity. If you’ve signed up for this newsletter, you probably already know about Indy Dough. (If you don’t, do tell me how you got here!) I’m not going to go into the story of how Indy Dough got started, because I do tell that one a lot, and I will share it again on Instagram. Let’s talk about why I’m starting this newsletter.
I can see that Indy Dough won’t be a pop-up business forever, and no matter how many pop-ups I do, it would likely be long time before I have the financial resources to open my own brick and mortar. So this is my way of planning ahead, building a base of people who will know more about me and my plans.
There will be a lot of behind the scenes thoughts, not just about Indy Dough, but about me. I’m no one special; I’m a mom who often sits on a couch torn up by a cat wondering why my toddler likes Blippi. Even though my personal life isn’t filled with much excitement, I always appreciate knowing the owner of a business more on a personal level. I appreciate knowing their why. I know that if I appreciate knowing more about a business owner, then there are others out there that feel the same way I do. If you don’t, then I'm pretty sure you can unsubscribe as quickly as you subscribed.
October was such a busy month for Indy Dough. I basically said yes to every pop-up outside of Studio C because we were going on a family vacation. Going on vacation during a pandemic meant finding a cabin in a tiny town in the mountains for us. It was great, and I was tired.
Can we talk about the structure of a s’mores for a second? First, whenever I do anything s’mores flavored, people line up. Is it the torched marshmallow that makes people go “I’m going to set five alarms to make sure I’m the one who wakes up in time to get that?” Okay, so making a campfire almost every night in the mountains and making sure we enjoyed s’mores each time was a must, but that first night I questioned the s’mores. I do a nice golden all around marshmallow that’s all roasty and toasty and niiice, but then ugh this melty warm soft mallow is ruined by my beloved chocolate that is basically a brick under the mallow goo. I hate my hands getting sticky, so if they’re going to be sticky it better be allllll worth it. The next night we made sure to find the perfect “baking” rock. A nice smooth surface to set next to the fire so the chocolate could get warm and slightly melted while I slowly roasted my marshmallow. Surely my group is not the most brilliant group there ever was, but in case you haven’t thought of it yet: next time you’re building your campfire make a nice little spot for a smooth surfaced rock to melt your chocolate. You’re welcome.
For the month of November I won’t be doing any pop-ups outside of Studio C because well, whew that was a lot, but also because I took on some Thanksgiving pie orders. They’re sold out, but I plan on making a few extra. Make sure you’re following my Instagram page, because I will post the evening of Thanksgiving Eve how many extras I have and how to claim them. If you’re reading this and you purchased a pie from me on Thanksgiving Day, let me just say thank you again, thank you!
At home I just received an order of wood pulp bannetons from FlourSide for my sourdough bread. I am in my second year of making sourdough bread, and this whole entire time I’ve been using a metal colander with a dish towel. I can’t believe I’ve waited this long. Now the next upgrade will be to get an actual lame instead of taking the blades from my husband’s stash for his safety razor. (They’re not the used ones, c’mon guys, that’s gross.)
I think that’s as long as a Newsletter should be, right? Make sure you’re following along on Instagram @indydough. I operate majority of my time out of Studio C. They offer so many different things, so it’s always good to follow them @studio_c_indy.
I’ve got a few things planned for December in the works, and hopefully my dreams of one day not being a pop-up anymore will come to fruition and I’ll be able to start asking my newsletter readers for money. 😂 As a reminder, that is the main goal for this. Sorry, not sorry.
Thanks so much for subscribing. You guys are wonderful and I really am grateful that a community has supported my work and passion. I know my passion is making cookies, doughnuts, bread, scones, etc, and everyone kinda wins from that, but I’m thankful you guys buy it.
k byyyyyeeeee
